One of the main characters, Mattie Michael, brings love and special attention to the lives of many of the women of Brewster place. Miss Eva shows concern for Mattie even in the very first moments of their time together. She is ab le to read the confusion and weariness in young Matties face and she immediately offers her assistance. Mattie is somewhat startled by Miss Evas appearance and forwardness. Miss Eva is an old woman with European features, yellow skin with watery blue eyes, but she speaks with a black voice. Her many inquiries about Matties circumstance cause Mattie to ponder the womans intentions and she acts rather awkward towards her. However Miss Eva, underneath her overbearing manner, is kindhearted and generous and she recognizes Matties present need. Miss Eva looks at the way Mattie holds her child and she understands (3). The old woman realizes that Mattie is young, alone, and at that moment, homeless. She reaches out to Mattie and eventually extends to her an invitation to stay in her home for the night. Mattie accepts the invitation and immediately Miss Evas motherly treatment of Mattie and Basil begins. As they are entering the house Miss Eva takes Basil from Mattie and coos and talks to t he baby and Mattie as if she has known them for years (32). The entire night she refers to Mattie as child and handles the Baby as if he were one of her own. She prepares a home cooked meal of pot roast, oven-browned potatoes, and string beans for Mattie and she insists on feeding the baby while Mattie enjoys the meal. Miss Eva offers to let Mattie live in her home for as long as she likes for no charge and she willingly accepts the company of Basil for her granddaughter. Mattie, who has grown to be untrusting because of her past experiences, eventually finds herself opening up to this woman whom she just met. Miss Evas compassion is a sudden relief that comes just in time for Mattie. For the first time in a several months Mattie is not alone and she has someone with whom she can share her life, her thoughts, and her struggles. Miss Eva too is pleased by the newfound companionship and together the women begin to reveal their lives to one another. In the abashed fashion of the old, M iss Eva unfolded her own life to Mattie, and without realizing she was being questioned, Mattie found herself talking about things that she had buried within in her. The young black women and the old yellow woman sat in the kitchen talking for hours, blending their lives so that what lay behind one and ahead of the other became indistinguishable (34)In the short time that the women spend together that night, they form a lasting bond that is superior that of any friendship. In the years that follow, Mattie grows to accept Miss Eva as a mother figure to her and her son. Miss Eva provides them with a home, food, and the loving care that a mother would provide for her children. Miss Eva expresses a great deal of concern for Mattie and her happiness. She questions Mattie about her social life and her love life. She even questions Mattie about the way she raises Basil arguing that Basil is spoiled and that he needs a bed of his own. Miss Eva meddles in Matties life just like a real mother , but she only does it out of love and concern. Although Mattie is often angered by Miss Evas interference in her life, she can never feel anything but love and gratitude for her. At times when Mattie gets frustrated she remembers Miss Evas age and the short but precious time they have left together. Mattie finds it very to imagine facing the loss of another mother (39). Miss Eva is truly a mother to Mattie. She shows her so much love and acceptance and gives her so much at a time when she has nothing. When Miss Eva passes, Mattie remains in the house with Basil. She knows Miss Eva wants her spirit to remain in the house through the memory of someone who was capable of loving it as mush as she had (40). Through her kindness and love, Miss Eva gave Mattie a chance to survive and live a fulfilling life in the company of those she cared most about. The sisterhood between Mattie and Etta Mae is illustrated by each womans willingness to help the other through their most trying times. Ett a Mae is the only person Mattie confides in after her pregnancy. After she leaves her home, her mother, and her father, Etta Mae is the only person Mattie can turn to. When Mattie arrives in North Carolina for the first time, Etta Mae is waiting to greet her. Knowing that her friend has been through a lot of pain in the past months, she offers her nothing but kind words and gentle humor. Etta Mae helps Mattie take her mind off of some of the pain by joking lightheartedly about her babys appearance and his potential. Etta proves her loyalty to her friend simply by being there for her. She has long become bored with her current location and circumstance and she plans to leave and go to New York, but instead she stays and waits for Mattie to arrive and get settled. Etta Mae lets Mattie know that she was ready to leave months ago, but when Mattie wrote and said she was comin, she stuck around to see her settled with the baby (27). Etta put her friends needs before her own concerns. She recognizes how important her presence is to her friend right now and she sacrifices her own happiness to stay and console Mattie. Etta even invites Mattie to come along with her to New York but Mattie turns down her enthusiastic invitation. Etta Mae stays with Mattie six weeks to help with the baby and make sure Mattie is settled. When she does finally leave, she leaves Mattie eight cases of condensed milk and coupons for fifty pounds of sugar. Etta Mae is not much more well off than Mattie but she still does everything in her power to provide comfort and assistance to her friend. Later in the novel, Etta Mae visits Mattie on Brewster place but this time it is Etta Mae who is in need of a friends encouragement. Etta Johnson has traveled through many major cities in search of the good life and the right man and by the time Etta comes to Brewster place her dreams have been dissipated in her pursuit of good times (Hairston, 1484). Mattie welcomes Etta into her home with open loving arm s. Her searching and traveling have defeated Etta Mae but she finds almost instant relief in the presence of Mattie. When she enters Matties small apartments she breathes deeply from the freedom she finds in Matties presence. There she has no choice but to be herself (Naylor, 58). During the course of their lives, Mattie and Etta have taken totally different roads but they still managed to maintain a deep friendship. Even though Mattie doesnt approve of many aspects of her friends lifestyle, she remains loyal to her. Mattie is never judgmental; she accepts Etta Mae and all of her faults. She gives her a place to stay and they share life stories and humor with each other. When Etta attends church with Mattie, she is not as much interested in soul searching as she is in searching for a man. Etta happiness still remains in men. Thus, she finds herself listening, not to the reverends sermon but to her old instincts telling her to lasso someone who can support her in the style that compl emented the type of woman she has fought all these years to become (Hairston, 1484). Despite admonishment and warning from Mattie, Etta engages herself with the good reverend who proves to be just as much a man of the world as of the cloth. When Etta comes home with her dreams of marrying the respectable preacher sordidly ended, she finds Mattie was waiting up to meet and comfort her (Gottlieb, 1483). Matties love for Etta is unfailing, like that of a real sister. Etta realizes that no man can ever offer her the type of love and loyalty that Mattie has given her. She has loved one man too many and even though she comes to Brewster place defeated, she finds light and love and comfort in the friendship of Mattie (Aull, 1; Naylor, 74)Ironically, Mattie is a more effective mother figure to Ciel than she proves to be to her own son. However, Matties failed relationship with Basil teaches her valuable lessons that help her to be a more effective mother on Brewster place. Matties mistake w ith Basil is that she uses him to fill a void. She loves the fact that he was solely dependent on her and that her bed hasnt been empty since Basil was born (38). Mattie spoils Basil to the point he would always has to have his way. He knows his mother will always be there for him, and because of that, he takes advantage of her. Mattie is determined not to make the same mistakes she made with Basil with Ciel. It is hard for Mattie to watch the turmoil and sadness Lucielia has to encounter in her love life. It is like watching her child suffer. However, Mattie lets Lucielia take control of her own life and learn from the consequences as well. She never tells her what to do, she just listens and gives her support. Matties love for Lucielia, whom she calls Ciel, is evident even before the childs death through her constant concern about Lucielias situation with her boyfriend. Her love is now demonstrated by her unfailing attempts to nurse her daughter back to health. Mattie refuses to sit back and watch Ciel kill herself. Mattie cries out a prayer and desperate to protect her young, surges into Lucielias room. While Ciel moans, Mattie rocks her back to life. Mattie rocked her out of that bed, out of that room, into a blue vastness just underneath the sun and above time. She rocked her over Aegean seas so clear they shone like crystal, so clear the fresh blood of sacrificed babies torn from their mothers arms and given to Neptune could be seen like pink froth on the water. She rocked her on and on, past Dachau, where soul-gutted Jewish mothers swept their childrens entrails off laboratory floors. They flew past the spilled brains of Senegalese infants whose mothers had dashed them on the wooden sides of slave ships. And she rocked on (103). She magnificently wrestles Ciel, dying of grief, back to life (Gottlieb p.1484). Matties motherly love and commitment heal and renew Lucielia physically and mentally. Author Felice Aull comments,It is Matties intervention and her ability to place Lucielias grief in a historical context and to know it as one more instance of murdered dreams in a long history of such murders that undergirds her life saving and healing intervention (Aull, 2) Mattie takes on the role of a mother when she nurses Ciel back to health. Mattie treats and nurses Lucielia as if handling a newborn(Naylor, 104). She gives Lucielia the determination to live and she does. For the first time since her daughters death Lucielia cries. However, Mattie is overjoyed because she knows the tears will endand morning will come (Naylor, 105). Mattie touched the lives of Ms. Eva, Etta Mae and Lucielia. They all needed eachother. The role Mattie played in each womans life was critical.All these women vary in age and personal background. However, what they do share is a common oppression and, more importantly, a spiritual strength and sense of female closeness. Mattie was the backbone of these women. Since, the number of units tested is constant (=200) in each sample, c-chart is perfect for the situation. Else, a p-chart could have been used. The values of constants A2, D3 and D4 are taken from standard tables for control chart constants (Here values for n=25 have been assumed for the sample size of 30 as the tables contain values till n=25 and calculating annually for higher values is very cumbersome) (Table for Control Chart Constants). For the colour defects, only 1 value (14) is found to lie outside the two control limits. Hence, from the colour defects point of view, the process is only marginally out of control. The control chart for the same is shown in Figure 1. For the heights, a large number of values in both R chart and x bar chart are found lie outside the control limits. Although many people compare the size of Sweden to the size of California, as they are roughly the same size, Sweden actually has the fourth largest land size and area in Europe. Many interesting features of Sweden are its physical features, agriculture, and its diverse cultural features. Sweden is officially called the Kingdom of Sweden, and is also sometimes called Mother Svea by its inhabitants. Sweden is located on the European continent, and is one of the northernmost countries, bordering Finland and Norway. Sweden is large, compared to countries in Europe, and has an area of 441,370 km ². California is roughly the same size as Sweden, although Sweden is 1.04 times bigger, as California has an area of 423,970 km ². Compared to the United States, Sweden is diminutive, as Sweden is 0.04 times bigger than the US. The US has an area of 9,833,000 km ², including Hawaii and Alaska. Although Sweden is a small country, it grows and produces many products. Sweden primarily grows crops such as oats, wheat, barley, rye, potatoes, root crops, vegetables, fruits, and sugar beets. This is vital to the country, as Sweden needs to have copious amounts of food to survive the long, sunless winter. Since slavery, African Americans have gone through a lot to reach their current state. In the early 20th century, African Americans faced discrimination, isolation, and were segregated according to their skin color. It started when Europeans brought the first Africans to America, and continued throughout the Civil War. The American government made some changes in policies. A variety of leaders shaped the successful struggle toward black equality in America (Bowles, 2011). Ever since slavery begun, African Americans have been determined to end segregation, discrimination, and isolation. Activists such as, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, and others, joined together to put an end to segregation, discrimination, and isolation to attain civil rights and equality. Slavery had changed dramatically in the late 1600s. About this time the slave trade to American colonies also began increasing to meet the demand for cheap labor. Traders sold slaves to the Northern colonies, but English and other European immigrants satisfied the demand for labor there (Echerd, 2009). Slaves in America came from western and central Africa. African tribes sometimes enslaved those defeated in intertribal wars and sold their captives to European slave traders. The tribes raided villages to obtain slaves to trade for European goods. Slave traders had even offered the Africans guns and other goods for the slaves. Slaves lived a rough, hard life. Cheap labor was a huge part of their lives. They had to work from sunrise to sunset. The work consisted of clearing land, tended to fields of tobacco, rice, and vegetables. They also performed many other tasks that had helped make plantations almost completely self-sufficient. No slaves saw any money for their tasks that they had performed, but they did receive food, clothing, and shelter. The slaves had resided in small one-room huts, which had no windows and the floors were all dirt. Most slaves accepted their living condition, however, they knew no other way of life (Koehler, 2009). However, white Southerners regained control of state governments in the South during the late 1870s, however, and reversed most of the previous gains made by former slaves. For example: segregation. What is segregation? According to Webster’s Dictionary, to segregate is defined as to separate or set apart from others; isolate or to require, often with force, the separation of a specific racial, religious, or other group from the body of society. Segregation has been a part of our American heritage, almost from the moment slaves arrived on the shores of the New World (Bowles, 2011). In 17th century Virginia, the theocratic government feared that racial mixing between freed and enslaved blacks and white indentured servants would become a means to usurp government power. They passed laws in which the color line was clearly defined in any criminal punishments. By treating whites and blacks separately and unequally, these Virginian leaders set up a system of white supremacy that would become an essential component of American slavery. Separation and segregation was the order of the day, with African Americans being forced to ride in separate railroad cars, have their own hotels and courthouses, and even get water out of their own drinking fountains. Their children could not attend the same schools with the White children. To further push the color-line, they then added in segregation with the Jim Crow Laws. This is mainly because the Whites were considered to be superior, and hence were thought to deserve better schools with better facilities. African Americans on the other hand were considered inferior, and hence their children attended low-quality schools that lacked adequate facilities (Sitkoff & Franklin, 2008). The Northern States, which had grew and prospered during the war, believed the former slaves to be equal as any other person. The Southern States, still angry over the loss of the war and their firm belief in White superiority, took a different approach. They created and enforced what were known as the Black Codes. These were legislations passed in Southern states to control labor, migration and other activities of the freed slaves. Black Codes allowed legal marriage, property ownership and limited access to the court systems. It prohibited them from testifying against whites, serving on juries or militias, voting and publicly expressing any form of legal concerns ( www. history. com). Any former slave that did not sign yearly labor contract with the plantation owners could be arrested and hired out. The Black codes in short allowed for the continued and legal discrimination against the former slaves (www. history. com). Congress quickly responded to these laws in 1866 and seized the initiative in remaking the south. Republicans wanted to ensure that with the remaking the south, freed blacks were made viable members of society. But the strong southern legislatures finally gave in; in 1868 they repealed most of the laws that discriminated against blacks. Things were starting to look up. But by 1877 Democratic parties regained their power of the south and ended reconstruction. In 1882, southern states passed Jim Crow laws that enforced strict segregation between blacks and whites and limited African-American civil rights. This was devastating to the blacks. After all the strides they made were reversed. From holding political offices, the right to vote, and participating as equal members of society was changed. The south gradually reinstated the racially discriminatory laws. The two main goals they wanted these laws to achieve: disenfranchisement and segregation. To take away the power that the blacks had gained, the Democratic Party began to stop Blacks from voting. There were many ways to stop blacks from voting. Some of these things were poll tax, which were fees were charged at voting booths and were expensive for most blacks, and the literacy test. Since teaching blacks were illegal, most adult blacks were former slaves and illiterate. And the other goal, segregation, causes the democrats to create laws that segregated the schools and public facilities. The KKK was founded in 1865 to 1866. They directed their violence towards black landowners, politicians, and community leaders. They also did this to people who supported Republicans or racial equalities (Anti-Defamation League, 2012). After the abolishment of slavery in the U. S. the KKK formed. They hated blacks and would commit crimes against them. Murders, hangings, and lynches are just some of the crimes against the blacks (www. kkk. bz, n. d. ). The Ku Klux Klan claims to be just defending their people like other races do. What is a lynching? Lynching is a form of punishment with no legal permission. Most times lynching occurred against African Americans by hanging them. This was very popular during the Gilded Age after the American Civil War when African Americans were freed from slavery. Many White men would use lynching against Black men for being in a mixed relationship with a White woman. However, because lynching had no legal basis, it was thought to have been a tool that was used against freed slaves that had achieved financial stability and authority in order to remain a White-dominated nation. Lynching was most likely performed by White Supremacy groups like the KKK. Lynching was done by hanging or shooting, or both. However, many were of a more hideous nature. Burning at the stake, maiming, dismemberment, castration, and other brutal methods of physical torture are all part of a lynching. Lynching therefore was a cruel combination of racism and sadism, which was utilized primarily to sustain the caste system in the South. Many white people believed that Negroes could only be controlled by fear. To them, lynching was seen as the most effective means of control. Defending your people is one thing, but to torture another human being is inhuman. The KKK has several stories out there today on how they treated the blacks, whether they did anything wrong or not. For instance, a Louisiana woman is in critical condition after she was set on fire, resulting in burns on roughly 60 percent of her body, and her car appears to have had racial slurs written on it at the time of her attack (Mach, n. d. ). They had even gone as far as church bombings. The KKK launched a bomb into a church during a Sunday service, which left four innocent teenage girls dead. The men responsible hid behind the cloak of secrecy, intimidation and the white robes of the oldest terrorist organization in the world, the Ku Klux Klan (Gado, n. d. ). Therefore, until the Civil Rights Act of 1964, racial discrimination is an issue that was not seriously tackled. The act was a successful result of most wide-ranging civil rights legislation and Civil Rights Movements for close to a century (Finkelman, 2009). The act declared discrimination on the basis of color, race, ethnicity, religion, and many other aspects as unconstitutional. During the critical years from 1954 to 1963, a variety of leaders with different backgrounds, such as lawyers from the NAACP, women sitting on buses, ministers from southern black churches, militants from black power organizations, and youth from colleges had shaped the successful struggle toward black equality in America (Bowles, 2011). In 1896, the Supreme Court’s Plessy v. Ferguson decision established that â€Å"separate but equal† facilities for whites and blacks were allowable under the U. S. Constitution. Local governmental officials could designate separate public facilities like drinking fountains, restrooms, and schools. Even courthouses often had separate Bibles according to the defendant’s race. The problem was that separate usually meant unequal, and segregation subverted the freedom of every African American (Sundquist, 1993). Now, it is time for the African- Americans to fight back. The incident that made them want to make a difference was the Rosa Park bus ride. After a long day of work on December 1, 1955, Parks, feet hurt, looked forward to sitting on the bus for her ride home. At the time, there was a city ordinance stating that African Americans had to give up their seats on a train or bus if a white man asked for them. When a white man approached Parks and told her that he wanted her seat, she simply said no. Although she acted as a private citizen, her response was as an informed, committed member of the NAACP movement. The bus driver had asked Parks to move. When she did not, the bus driver said, â€Å"Look, woman, I told you I wanted the seat. Are you going to stand up? † When Parks again said no, the driver threatened, â€Å"If you don’t stand up, I’m going to have you arrested. † She gave no reply but at the next stop, Rosa was arrested (Garrow, 2004). A pastor known as Martin Luther King Jr., organized a boycott, the Montgomery bus boycott. King Jr. took this to a higher level and maintained and organized the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), which coordinated similar bus boycotts in other cities. Shortly after the boycott, King had found a bomb on his porch. King went to Birmingham, Alabama, where he continued his nonviolent protests and marches. However, the police authorized force to disband King’s followers by using electric cattle prods, tear gas, and fire hoses (Bowles, 2011). King was arrested with the others, but upon his release from jail he went to Washington, D. C., where he and demonstrators met at the National Mall and addressed them with his famous â€Å"We Shall Overcome† speech on August 23, 1963. King’s words at the capital that day were a defining moment of the Civil Rights movement. Other demonstrations and civil disobedience campaigns sought to increase African-American voter registration and win better jobs. Malcolm X actively promoted the Black Muslim cause. Even after speaking about non-violence and wanting peace, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. The civil rights movement dramatically increased participation of African- American voters in both the South and the North today. By the mid-70s some 4000 African-Americans have been elected to political office at all levels of government. Qualified African-Americans now have a wider range of opportunities than ever before. Whether you are White or African-American, each group has faced its own peculiar challenges on its approach to democracy (Rappaport, 2001). This racism is wrong and unconstitutional. The 13th Amendment is ratified, abolishing slavery, which some people still went against it. The 14th Amendment granted citizenship to the former slaves and forbade states from denying any person life, liberty, or property without due process of the law. The 14th Amendment also guaranteed equal protection of the law for all citizens. The 15th Amendment barred states from denying citizens the right to vote based on race, color, or previous servitude (Hertz, 2009). In a perfect world, everyone would be equal. The color of one’s skin, religious beliefs or sexual preference would mean nothing. We would accept everyone for whom and what they are. We would rejoice in the differences between each other instead of belittling, hating and discriminating against those differences. We don’t however live in a perfect world. We live in a world filled with distrust and hate. If we don’t know or understand it in our society, then it is wrong. It will be discriminated against in one form or another. We as a country have made major strides in overcoming racism, however we still have far to go. In conclusion, African Americans faced isolation, discrimination, and segregation during the post-construction period. Racial discrimination was also prevalent in the military where back soldiers were considered inferior to white soldiers and hence poorly trained and equipped. The issue of racial discrimination, isolation and segregation was not seriously tackled until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was enacted. Civil rights activists such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. organized the famous 1963 protest in Washington that eventually forced President John Kennedy to pass the Act. They have licensed and certified registered nurse anesthetists in all fifty states. To become a nurse anesthetist, it is necessary to first become a registered nurse. There are four ways to become a registered nurse. It is possible through a two-year community college, earning an associates degree in nursing, or through a three-year hospital based nursing school, earning a diploma. Other possible ways include a four-year university program, resulting in a Bachelors of Science degree in nursing, or the B. S. N. , as it is commonly called. For those who have a bachelors degree in another subject, there is a generic masters degree in nursing, a two or a three-year program beyond the bachelors degree. In the future, the B. S. N. is being considered the minimum qualification for a satisfying career. The two-year associates degree and the hospital-based diploma programs are rapidly closing around the country, and student nurses are being encouraged to enroll in four-year universities. It was written by a local journalist, Tintin Bersola-Babao according to her interview with a â€Å"noted psychologist. The article details how parents should stop all the effeminate ways of their children and how to tell them that they are what â€Å"God† made them and they must live a family with only the opposite sex in the future. Phrasing my last sentence that way is an understatement on how the article abhors the LGBT and limits a child’s choice on his own sexual identity, but at least, you have a hint of where I’m coming from. This essay is entitled â€Å"Being Gay,† the same title as that of the said article I have read to parallelize the contentions of what should the parents do to their gay child according to the perspective of a â€Å"noted psychologist† who speaks of the word of her god (I still don’t know which god she has been referring to all those times, though) rather than the word of her profession and someone from the LGBT and is happy that his parents never did what the article advised them to do. On the choice of â€Å"Being† Gay First of all, the title of the article has expressed a belief that the author, under her mind, has the idea of gayness as a state of being rather than a stigma. You, parents should be able to understand that homosexuality is not an imposed consciousness that your children have to live with, because nothing should be imposed on them, to begin with. They live their own lives according to what they inherently have, not that someone has inflicted them with characteristics and told them what they should be just because the bible says so. You should let your children explore the horizons of their sexuality than impose an identity that you want your children to have. Your child’s identity is a product of the choices they made, the challenges they faced, and the trials they conquered. In order to positively maximize your child’s personality, s/he should not be limited to the out dated social norms and concepts of morality. These things stop them from being who they really are like a box that imprisons them in the shadow of others. Without giving them the freedom to discover their own ‘self,’ children further evelops confusion on their own sexuality. They will question themselves because they deviate from what you told them to be, worse, on what they can see and get from the society. Even you prohibit your gay child to be effeminate, his inner â€Å"gay† self will still manifest, one day or another. That is because once again, gayness is a state of being. You can’t strip that aspe ct of your child off them. That is who they are. The least you can do is to accept them, nurture them, and support them. Besides, whatever they will become, they are your children. Switching gears, I want to take a look t two concepts that are relevant to this matter. This concept derives from the same word but has two different meaning depending on what layer you are transgressing. Attitude at the cognitive layer can be defined as willing to stop ethnocentrism, juddering another culture solely by the values and standards of ones own culture, and be open minded in learning about cultural differences issues; look at it in terms of large scale. In other words one must knowingly stop with the Im better than you type of mentality and be able to go into culturally different learning setting with a unbiased mind set and willingness to learn from others. I took this different feeling I had and put it into developing an open heart and devoted it to a new perspective and a new culture that I believed was right for me. I felt right at home and realized I need a culture change in my life. With that in mind along with knowing that I never belonged in culture I was brought up in, when the chance for me to change cultures was possible I did it with no hesitation, it was what I anted my whole life to finally belong. My first couple experiences with intercultural relationships and the gay culture surprised me, in the sense that yes it was a new experience but was uprising to me that it felt so natural and right. Years slowly went by, and by the end of each year I was improving more and more on my intercultural relationship skills. Simultaneously as the years passed my conflict towards the feeling of being different grew smaller and smaller until it went away completely.
